On Tuesday, June 4, eligible voters in Rosewood will have the opportunity to vote for an at-large candidate to the Richland One School Board. The winner of this election will fill the unexpired term of the late Barbara Scott. The term expires in 2016.

The following candidates are vying for this seat: Pamela Adams, Deborah Belton, Doretha Bull, Reginald Sims, and Karen Wilson.

South Kilbourne Neighborhood Association Monthly Meeting

Please join the South Kilbourne Neighborhood for their monthly meeting on Thursday, May 2nd, at 6:30 pm at the Jim Hamilton-Owens Field Airport, large conference room. Speakers will include Richland County Coroner, Gary Watts and our City Council representative Moe Baddourah. City of Columbia Police will be on hand to give updates on what has been happening in the S. Kilbourne area.

Crawdaddy Dash

Look out for the fourth annual Crawdaddy Dash 5K run and 1 mile walk through Rosewood before the Crawfish Festival this year. The race begins at City Roots at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 11.

Community Orchard at Owens Field Park

Rosewood is home to a fruit orchard near the track at Owens Field Park. In 2011, the Corporation for Economic Opportunity (CEO) was awarded a grant for a community orchard from Edy’s Fruit Bars and the Tree Planting Foundation. Owens Field Park in Rosewood was chosen as the location to plant the orchard. We owe a big thank you to CEO and Edy’s, everyone who voted for Columbia to win, and the volunteers who helped plant the orchard!

Parks Renovations Nearing Completion

Improvements to Rosewood and Valencia Parks are nearing completion. Stay tuned for details on a party to celebrate the newly-renovated parks. See pictures of the progress below.

The new playground equipment is part of a larger renovation plan.

Rosewood Community Council would like to thank the following for their help in completing these projects:

SCE&G for the majority of funding for these renovations,
Councilwoman Belinda Gergel for her guidance throughout the project,
the City of Columbia Parks Department for their help in planning and implementing these plans and for securing additional grants,
the Columbia Community Development Office for the community development block grant we received, and
Representative James Smith for his help in securing a State PARD grant.

Owens Field Park Cleanup

Rosewood Elementary School is hosting a 5K run around Owens Field Park and through Rosewood on April 13. Let’s make sure the neighborhood is sparkling clean!

Please join us the weekend before the race, to clean up the roads around the park. We’ll meet at the skate park at Owens Field Park at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 6. Bring gloves if you have them.

Rosewood Elementary 5K

Dust off those running shoes, neighbors! Rosewood Elementary is sponsoring its third annual 5K run on Saturday, April 13, to benefit the school’s PTO. In addition to the 5K, the Rosewood Eagles will host a one mile fun run for kids (and us big kids who can’t run the full 5K) and a new mascot challenge. All events begin in the Memorial Stadium parking lot on Holly Street.

Police Substation in Rosewood–Donations Sought

The Columbia Police Department is opening a K-9 substation on Adeline Dr. in Rosewood!

They are in need of office furniture and are open to any and all donations. They’ll be willing to take a look at whatever anyone has to offer and help move it! Items needed include office chairs, office desks, shelving, storage type furniture, other various chairs, and the long shot….a refrigerator.

Owens Field Park Bioblitz

The A.C. Moore Herbarium at the University of South Carolina and the Rosewood Community Council will partner to conduct a BioBlitz at the Owens Field Park in the Rosewood Community on Saturday, March 9. Citizen scientists and interested community members are invited to take part in the survey, which will document the plant species along the Park’s trail system. A team of botanists affiliated with the A.C. Moore Herbarium will lead the study.

This BioBlitz will provide important information about environmental quality and land use changes in the Rosewood area. Documenting the Park’s botanical diversity will also allow for a better understanding of the natural plant communities that once occurred throughout the Rosewood area and will foster a greater appreciation for the community’s remaining natural areas.

Owens Field Park is a recreational area used by the public. Improvements to the Park’s trail system are being funded by the Richland County Conservation Commission.

The BioBlitz is open to the public. Participants should meet at the parking lot on the corner of South Holly Street and Airport Blvd adjacent to Memorial Stadium at 10 am on Saturday, March 9. Maps, data sheets and instructions will be provided; participants may bring garden gloves, digital cameras, and/or handheld GPS devices. No prior experience is required. Dress appropriately for outside work (closed toed shoes recommended) and bring a water bottle. The BioBlitz will be rescheduled in the event of inclement weather.
