Owens Field Park Cleanup

It’s time to clean up Owens Field Park again! Recent events in the park have left it a bit of a mess. Please join us at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 12, at the Memorial Stadium parking lot entrance to the park. We’re targeting the area from the entrance to the skate park, so we should be able to tackle that in an hour. Bring gloves if you have them. Hope to see you there!

Code Enforcement Meeting Recap

Did you know:

Your trash roll cart can be placed on the street only on the day of trash collection
Any car on private property in the city must be operable and licensed
Only three unrelated people can live in one house
Your grass can’t be taller than 12 inches

Here is a cheat sheet listing the top ten most common city code enforcement violations. The City of Columbia property maintenance division provided this list at the RCC meeting April 19.

If you want to report a violation, call 545-3430.

City Tree Planting Program

Have you seen trees around town with these green bags at the base? They were planted as part of an ongoing City of Columbia Forestry & Beautification project that plants trees in the right-of-way of your property, at no charge to you. The city will maintain the water bag the first two years after planting.

Whether you had a tree fall during a storm, or just want to add to the canopy of your street, call 545-3860 for more information.

Rosewood Park Construction

Rosewood Park is in the beginning stages of a major renovation of its facilities. See below for pictures of the construction, and check back for updated pictures of the progress! Click here to learn more about what we’re planning here and at Valencia Park.

March 19, 2012: The city dug a hole where the rain garden will be.

Two benches had to be moved to make room for the rain garden.

May 02, 2012: The city dug trenches where the new conduits for the lighting system will run.

The old lights (below left) will be removed and a new lighting scheme (below right) will be implemented to provide greater lighting of the park, without unnecessarily intruding into neighbors’ yards.

May 14, 2012: The city graded the parking lot in preparation for paving. The parking lot will be constructed with porous pavers. Read more about this new material here.

May 31, 2012: Old lights are taken down as new lights begin to be installed.

Community Garden at the Ben Arnold Boys and Girls Club

This spring, RCC is helping to revive the community garden behind the Boys and Girls Club. Here’s what the garden looked like in March.

The city has since mowed the grass, and the great volunteers below helped weed the plots.

Below is the garden on April 7, ready to be planted.

Can’t wait to see what these look like full of veggies!

701 Center for Contemporary Art Driving Tour

Rosewood will have a few of our own home grown artists featured during 701 CCA’s self-led driving tour of Midlands-area artists. Check out photography like Brian Dressler’s rad picture of Columbia at right (and more!) during the driving tour open house April 21st and 22nd.

Also featured in Rosewood will be awesome crafters Kelly and J. Spencer Shull (312 S. Woodrow), mixed media artist Amanda Ladymon (413 S. Woodrow), and stone mason Jefferson Hubbell (905 Chevis). McClellan Douglas, Jr. (3735 Prentice), painter of the mural-in-progress below, is also on the tour. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to experience some great neighborhood artists! Look for a program and map in the April 18th edition of the Free Times and on the CCA website.

701 Center for Contemporary Art (701 CCA), Columbia’s nonprofit visual arts and artist-in-residence center, presents Columbia Open Studios on April 21st and 22nd, 2012, as part of the 6th Annual Indie Grits Festival. This free, self-led driving tour of 69 artists’ studios throughout Richland and Lexington Counties showcases the Midlands’ talented visual art community and allows the public to meet esteemed local artists and see their working process at their home studios. (Artists keep 100% of sales.) Join them for a festive Preview Party and Indie Grits Kickoff on Thursday, April 19, 7-11pm in the Grand Hall at 701 Whaley with a complimentary grits bar, cash bar, soul, pop + oldies DJs, and lots of DIY fun! $8 advance, $10 door, all ages.

Rosewood Crawfish Festival

It’s that time again! Music, beer, and seven thousand pounds of crawfish will be descending upon Rosewood Drive on May 5th, from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for the 7th Annual Rosewood Crawfish Festival. Rosewood Community Council is sponsoring a table and we need volunteers! Do you have an hour? Two hours? All day? Please help out your neighborhood by volunteering to work at our table.
